Rabbi Shlomo Elie (Eliyahu) Uszpol came from family affiliated with Chabad branch of Chasidism. He studied in Yeshiva of Dvinsk, Latvia. In 1926 he was appointed Head of the Religious Court of Kurzeniec, Poland, where he was active in Jewish communal affairs. He raised funds from American Jewish sources to bury Jewish soldiers who were killed in World War I, in Palestine. He was murdered together with other Jews from Kurzeniec, during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, in 1941
