Jonas Turkow was a theater personality, writer, and civic leader. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898, he came from a family of actors. His brothers were Zygmunt, Marek, and Isaac. He was married to the Yiddish theater actress, Diana Blumenfeld-Turkow [b. 1903-d. 1961]. In 1917, he joined E.R. Kaminska's acting troupe, which was only one of many to which he would later belong. He performed and directed Yiddish and Polish films. During WWII, he was active in the underground movement in the Warsaw ghetto. He left Poland in 1946 for a tour of the DP camps in Western Europe, eventually making his way to the United States in 1947. He later emigrated to Israel in 1966, where he died in 1988.
