In a joint effort between the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Colonization Association in 1924, the American Joint Reconstruction Foundation was established to fulfill the purpose of economic reconstruction of Jewish communities in Eastern Europe after World War I. It was managed by the two organizations through a representative of each. Its main tasks were the establishment of cooperative credit institutions, commercial banks, and workers' cooperatives, and the rebuilding of housing destroyed during World War I.
