Jewish Actors' Union.  Founded in  1919 as a professional association to protect and promote the interests and welfare of Yiddish actors.  Aid to members included financial subsidies and loans, medical and legal assistance and school and summer camp scholarships. The Union also concerned itself with the development of high artistic standards for the Yiddish theater and took a stand against the popular "shund" theater of the period.  In addition, it actively participated in theatrical productions and tried to establish a cooperative network of Yiddish theater companies.      The union affiliated itself with the labor movement and maintained contacts with TSYSHO (Central Yiddish School Organization), with the Yiddish Writers and Journalists Union and with Jewish newspapers.  The union was in existence until the outbreak of World War II.
